About this Event

🌱 About This Event

Join The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) for a hands-on conservation session at Wardie Recreation Grounds, supporting the development of a diverse wildlife garden.

This work is part of the Edinburgh Biodiversity Action Team (EBAT) programme, contributing to the Edinburgh Nature Network and Urban Biodiversity Enhancement Strategy.

🌿 Nature isn’t just for wildlife—it’s for people too.
Through TCV’s Nature for All approach, we create opportunities for people to play a direct role in improving their local environment.

🔧 Programme Focus – Urban Habitat Creation

This session focuses on small-scale habitat creation with high ecological value, combining multiple features within an urban setting.

We’ll be working to:

  • Increase habitat diversity
  • Improve conditions for wildlife
  • Create a more resilient and connected greenspace

How Our Volunteer Days Work

We aim to deliver sessions Tuesday–Thursday each week, although this may vary depending on weather and site needs.

  • Sessions typically begin at 10:00
  • Flexible attendance is welcome

🌿 That’s the nature of working outdoors.

📍 Session Details

📅 Date: Wednesday 17 June
🕙 Start time: 10:00
⏱ Duration: ~3–4 hours
📍 Location: Wardie Recreation Grounds

🌿 What We’ll Be Doing

This session will involve a mix of practical habitat creation and management, including:

  • Pond management (maintenance, vegetation control, potential liner work depending on progress)
  • Dead hedge creation, using natural materials to form habitat corridors and protective features
  • Scything and meadow management around key areas

We’ll also explore:

  • How different habitats interact within a small site
  • What species these features support
  • Opportunities for further enhancement

👉 A varied and engaging session delivering immediate and long-term benefits.

🌿 Why This Work Matters

Diverse habitats—even at small scales—can support a wide range of species in urban environments.

This work helps to:

💧 Pond habitats:
  • Support amphibians, aquatic invertebrates, and birds
  • Provide valuable freshwater ecosystems, which are often limited in urban areas

🌿 Meadow areas:
  • Increase wildflower diversity
  • Provide food for pollinators
  • Improve overall habitat condition

🌳 Dead hedging:
  • Creates shelter and nesting habitat
  • Protects areas from disturbance
  • Supports insects and small mammals

👉 These combined features create a more complete and functional ecosystem, even in a compact space.

🔬 Citizen Science Opportunities

This site provides opportunities to observe and potentially record:

  • 🐝 Pollinator activity in meadow areas
  • 🌼 Plant species diversity
  • 🐞 Invertebrates associated with deadwood and pond edges

👉 A great introduction to thinking about habitats as interconnected systems.

🌍 Building a Community

This session is part of a wider effort to enhance urban biodiversity across Edinburgh through community involvement.

Volunteers are:

  • Creating new habitats
  • Improving existing sites
  • Building knowledge and skills
  • Contributing to long-term biodiversity outcomes

👉 Small sites like Wardie play an important role in the bigger Nature Network.
