About this Event

Tatreez + Natural Dyeing Workshop

Join Kana’an Collective and Abuelita Fiber Company at Woven History for a hands-on workshop exploring two parts of the textile-making process: embroidery and natural dyeing.

We’ll begin with an introduction to tatreez, the traditional Palestinian embroidery practice, through Kana’an Collective. This beginner-friendly portion will introduce participants to the history and significance of tatreez before guiding you through creating your own embroidered piece.

We’ll then turn our attention to the thread itself.

Abuelita Fiber Company focuses on naturally dyed fibers sourced locally throughout the Chesapeake Bay area. Their work centers on a love of wool, natural materials, and learning more about how fiber is produced. During the workshop, you’ll learn about natural dyeing and experiment with transforming thread using natural materials and locally sourced fibers.

This is an opportunity to slow down and experience the textile process from fiber and color to stitch.

You'll Come Away With
  • 🧵 A beginner tatreez kit with the supplies needed to complete your project
  • 🌿 Two wooden spools of naturally dyed sashiko thread
  • A completed or in-progress beginner tatreez project
  • A better understanding of Palestinian embroidery and the significance of tatreez
  • An introduction to natural dyeing and the process behind creating color from natural materials

Light refreshments will also be provided throughout the workshop.

What You'll Experience
  • An introduction to Palestinian tatreez and its cultural significance
  • Hands-on thread dyeing using natural materials
  • Time to experiment, stitch, and connect with other textile enthusiasts

No previous tatreez, embroidery, or dyeing experience is required.

Come curious, ready to get hands-on, and prepared to spend an afternoon learning, making, and connecting through textiles.
