This is a social gathering to mark Tartan Day - everyone welcome! Come, share a beverage or story, and celebrate the Scottish spirit!
WHAT IS TARTAN DAY?
On April 6, 1320, the Declaration of Arbroath, Scotland’s written assertion of independence, was signed. When Canadian descendants of Scottish immigrants were looking for a date to honour the past and current contributions of those with Scottish heritage, April 6 was chosen to become Tartan Day. It was first celebrated in Nova Scotia and formally adopted by New Brunswick in 1993. The Government of Canada recognized Tartan Day as a national observance in 2010.
CITY OF MONCTON TARTAN
Moncton’s tartan was registered in 2000 and was designed by Alena MacAlasdair, who served as the Honourary Chieftan at the 2019 Moncton Highland Games.
The colours in the city's tartan are:
🤎 brown for our 'Chocolate River,' the mighty Petitcodiac with its surfable Tidal Bore
❤️ red for our Scottish roots
💚 green for our Irish roots
💙 blue for our Welsh roots
💛 gold for all the cultures and communities who bind us together
Anyone who calls Moncton home can also claim this tartan as their own. New Brunswick also has a tartan, so no one needs to feel left out!
