The JB Duke Hotel, a distinctive, AAA Four Diamond hotel property located on Duke University's campus, is hosting an introductory dance class, titled “Tango for Two,” on Thursday, May 30 from 6-8 p.m. Led by Sadie Zimet of Ninth Street Dance, the dance class explores the basic footwork, lead and follow techniques, and turns that sweep you across the ballroom and create the Tango’s electric feel. Encompassing passionate, sharp movements, the Tango is often dramatic in nature and embodies the rhythmic and melodic structure of the music. Adding to the immersive experience, guests will then venture to the JB Duke’s chic Lobby Lounge to enjoy an intimate Q&A session to learn about the cultural context and origins of the dance style they just mastered. The imaginative culinary team will also serve a complimentary sample of a specialty cocktail inspired by the unique culture and flavor profiles of the time period.
The dance class and Q&A experience is priced at $25, and advanced registration is required by completing the following form: https://form.jotform.com/241065736455156. Beginners are welcome, and dancers may register alone or as a couple (please complete a separate registration form for each participant).
Zimet is a Durham-based artist who has been teaching ballroom and social dance in the Triangle since 2013, including East and West Coast Swing, Tango, Merengue, Cha Cha, Rumba, Fox Trot, Waltz, Lindy Hop, Blues, Salsa and more. She is also an award-winning musician and Appalachian clogger.
The “Tango for Two” dance class is part of the “Step Into Summer” Dance Series – a weekly program hosted by the JB Duke and the neighboring Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club inviting guests to journey back in time and experience the magic of social dance. Interested participants can explore the additional class offerings via the registration link above, including “Rhythms of the Rumba,” “Swing in Style” and “Wonders of the Waltz.”
