Learn the traditional craft of making a hand-built tampico fiber brush using time-tested techniques and natural materials. This four-hour, hands-on class introduces students to brush making from start to finish and is suitable for beginners with no prior woodworking or craft experience.
Students will begin by learning how tampico fiber is traditionally used in utility and hand brushes. Participants will shape, drill, and finish a solid wood brush block using hand tools and simple shop equipment. Instruction will cover layout, drilling patterns, depth control, and shaping techniques to prepare the block for fiber installation.
Once the wooden brush block is prepared, students will learn how to bundle, tie, wrap, and trim natural tampico fibers. Careful attention will be given to fiber density, alignment, and trimming to ensure the finished brush is soft, balanced, and functional. Students will also learn basic finishing techniques to protect and enhance the wood.
Hands On Deck will provide all materials, tools, and equipment needed for the class. The class is structured to move at a comfortable pace, with individual guidance throughout. Each student will leave with a completed, functional tampico fiber brush they made themselves.
