Joe Manson is the founder and president of EcoInspire Inc, a Tampa-based nonprofit that uses hands-on ecology projects to inspire students. His passion for fishkeeping and shrimpkeeping led him to explore planted aquariums, small aquatic ecosystems, and the natural cycles that keep them balanced. Over time, that hobby grew into EcoInspire’s Classroom Ecosphere program, which brings living aquatic ecosystems into classrooms as tools for teaching biology, ecology, and systems thinking.
Joe will share how aquarium keeping helped inspire the founding of EcoInspire Inc and the development of the Classroom Ecosphere program. The presentation will focus on the stars of the Classroom Ecospheres: the hardy and industrious Opae Ula shrimp, Halocaridina rubra. He will discuss breeding, care, and the unique qualities that make these shrimp well suited for classroom ecospheres, while also exploring how small aquatic systems can help students better understand the living world.
