The Song of the Cello

The second talk of the series this month by Dr. Cavas Bilimoria will focus on the instrument, cello. The talk will showcase how the cello’s depth and the timber of its sounds can evoke different and profound emotions more convincingly than other string instruments. In this talk, Dr. Bilimoria will also demonstrate different pieces of music and inform the audience that the cello is best suited to interpret them.

Romancing the Violin

In this series of talks on Western Classical Music, Dr. Cavas Bilimoria takes listeners through musical concepts, the lives of composers and their famous works, interspersed with examples from recorded music.

In the first talk this month, Dr. Bilimoria will demonstrate the singing quality of the violin through videos of 10 well-known short pieces for the instrument played by different violinists along with a brief introduction to each piece. All pieces discussed are popular and form an essential part of every concert violinist’s repertoire.

Mendelssohn: Octet for Strings

For the second series of talks on Western classical music, Dr. Cavas Bilimoria will focus on a composition written in 1825 by German composer Felix Mendelssohn when he was 16 years old.

Octet for Strings is written for four violins, two violas and two cellos and is known for the fluidity of its melody, making it a favourite with string players and chamber music lovers. Throughout this composition, each of the eight instruments are used a bit differently to achieve maximum musical contrast.
