Sound Affects is a monthly night of talks about music and subcultures, ideas around how sound affects us and how music changes the world. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker

This is a Metal Special event with talks about Slipknot and HR Giger, a documentary screening & discussion, and a special guest appearance from the late Aleister Crowley.
Guest speakers:
Dan Franklin: This is the book launch for Dan's new book 'Somewhere Between Screaming And Crying: Slipknot, nu metal and 9/11'. This is the first book to fully unpack the rise of Slipknot and the creation of their landmark 2001 album Iowa – a record that revolutionised heavy metal, and came to define not just a band, but the emotional atmosphere of the early 21st century. Published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the album’s release, this is a gripping deep dive into how nine masked maniacs from Des Moines, Iowa, became one of the most controversial and culturally significant acts of their time. Dan is the author of 'Heavy: How Metal Changes the Way We See the World ' and 'Come My Fanatics: A Journey into the World of Electric Wizard'. He's spoken at Sound Affects a couple of times and is always fantastic.

Myroslava Halushka is a curator, researcher, and speaker who has worked in partnership with the H. R. Giger Estate since 2015. Through exhibitions, publications, and public programmes, her work explores Giger’s enduring influence on art, film, music, and contemporary culture. She is currently writing ‘HR Giger’s Rites of Passage’, to be published by Kulturalis in 2027.
Aleister Crowley is the wickedest man in the world.
Myra Stuart channels the wisdom and weirdness of ages through cuddly fleece. Expect Statler and Waldorf from The Muppets meet the Ancient of Days. A joke Myra Stuart made about a puppet of Alan Watts in 2014 unexpectedly began a series; puppets of key figures from alternative history. Channelling these powerful presences in fleece grew into something both deeper and even sillier than expected. In the rest of her life Myra, through events, workshops and resources, works with communities and individuals to help them connect, break through blocks and find their inner knowing. It’s possible that the puppets aren’t so separate from this work.
Also:
VICE documentary screening: Jesus Loves Goths. A short film about a bible study group for metalheads, punks and goths in London. It explores how this unique group manage to combine their love of dark, gothic imagery and heavy music with a Christian lifestyle. The documentary was made by Sound Affects host Jak Hutchcraft and he'll be giving insights into this paradoxical world of death metal Christianity, and the years he spent with the group.
