TALKING HEADS NIGHT: My Dinner with Andre & talking shorts

We’re told that talking is the lowest form of cinematic storytelling, that exposition is death and dialogue is derogatory. But we all talk in one way or another, who are we to cut ourselves off from communication and banish it from the cinematic experience?
Normal Cinema Club wants to prove that even the simplest of acts, the humble chinwag, can be as illuminating/thrilling/moving as any gunfight/car chase/minion.
Our feature of the night is Louis Malle's MY DINNER WITH ANDRE. Written by and starring New York theatre legends Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, the film follows Shawn's character as he reluctantly attends dinner with his old friend Gregory, who disappeared after a midlife crisis with rumours of his newfound eccentricities rippling through the theatre scene. Their conversation over dinner spans life, death and pretty much everything inbetween, ranging from the heartwarming to the conspiratorial. You might have heard of this film from its many many parodies, or perhaps you know it just as the 'film about two guys talking over dinner', but throw away your preconceptions! This is one of the most thrilling and exciting films you'll see this year!
Before our feature presentation, we are proud to present a programme of shorts about shooting the shit and putting the world to rights. Before her breakout feature BLUE HERON, Sophy Romvari made PUMPKIN MOVIE, a moving, important film documenting an annual Halloween tradition with her friend. Over Skype, they carve pumpkins and tell each other their negative encounters with men. There's power in pumpkins, and there's power in pontificating!
GERRY by Seán Mullan captures a brief snapshot of a man tending to his pigeons. As he speaks his mind and shares his wisdom, we focus only on him and the task at hand. This tender and intimate film is documentary in its purest and most poignant expression.
And to complement these shorts, Normal Cinema Club is proud to welcome back the garrulous, the loquacious, the motormouth Duffy brothers with some of their moving-image diatribes on the notion of conversation.
The Beanbag Cinema is a micro-cinema venue situated on the ground floor with a gender-neutral restroom. Please get in touch with any questions about accessibility. Doors will open at 6.30pm, with the first films beginning shortly after 7pm. This is a strictly 18+ event.
