Talking ASD & ADHD: Sibling Struggles (713) For parents/carers in Herts.

Parents often tell us how exhausted they feel at trying to manage all the needs within the family and share their guilt at not giving as much time and attention to all their children when one child has additional needs.

Juggling these needs can become even more challenging when there is more than one child in the home with ASD and or ADHD, which, we know is common.

There are also pressures on the siblings of children with ASD and ADHD and the experience of being part of a family with complex needs can be both positive and negative.

Recent research has found that siblings with children with ASD are more likely than siblings of children without autism to have poor social skills, be withdrawn and fare worse both socially and emotionally than siblings of children with a learning disability or other forms of developmental delay.

But it doesn't have to be this way!

There are things that we can do that will make all the difference and we know that the smallest change in our approach can have a significant affect on everyone.

Run by highly experienced facilitators, counsellors and parenting practitioners, this online workshop will help parents to understand:

• What do do when your children are fighting or arguing
• How to deal with jealousy
• How to teach your children to communicate with each other without this leading to conflict.
• The pressures and worries on siblings when you live within a family with a child with ASD and/or ADHD, particularly during the global pandemic.
• How to manage their own difficult feelings and help their children to manage theirs
• How to help their children develop a network of support.
• The challenges faced by siblings when needs are changing frequently at home and learn how to respond to ensure their child feels safe.
• Support their child to develop good mental health and reduce anxiety now and the future.
• Where to access further help and support.

The workshop will take place via Zoom and will incorporate a Q&A session.

This workshop is provided free to parents by Herts County Council and it is open to all parents and carers of children aged 2-25 years old with suspected or diagnosed Autistic Spectrum Disorder and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder who are living in Hertfordshire.

There are a limited number of places which are offered on a first come, first served basis.
