In 2022 our talks will yet again open up to the public.
First out is ‘In all the Hues of Nature’ – How Colour came to the Cinema.
Speaker: James Beyer.
Saturday 29th January 2022,
12noon, Club Room

Following his earlier presentation – ‘How the Movies Learnt to Talk’ – James Beyer continues his look at cinema history with an informative and entertaining introduction to the development of colour. Covering the period from the mid-19th century to the mid-1930s, this introduction to ‘How Colour came to the Cinema’ will examine the work of early inventors and pioneers, primitive examples of colourisation, the firstattempts at reproducing ‘natural colour’ and ground-breaking systems such as Kinemacolor, Pathécolor and Technicolor. The presentation will end with a brief look at examples of modern colourisation. Along the way we will meet – among others – Sir Isaac Newton, James Clerk Maxwell, William Friese-Greene, Charles Pathé, Judy Garland and Errol Flynn!
