Richards and Spence
Founded in 2008 by Ingrid Richards and Adrian Spence, Richards and Spence Architects was established with the belief that private development can enrich public life.
Graduates of the University of Queensland, Ingrid and Adrian have practiced in Brisbane for more than two decades, developing a body of work defined by strategic clarity, material permanence and carefully choreographed urban experience.
The practice has played a defining role in the evolution of Brisbane's James Street Precinct, delivering projects including Ada Lane and The Calile Hotel. Together, these works have helped shape one of Australia's most influential mixed-use urban precincts, demonstrating how architecture, landscape and hospitality can foster enduring public life.
Building on its contribution to Fish Lane Town Square, Richards and Spence is currently collaborating with Bates Smart on Melbourne Street, a major mixed-use development for Aria Property Group, now under construction.
Most recently, the practice completed 205 North Quay, a landmark commercial tower for Cbus Property in collaboration with Hassell and REX. Across its work, the practice has developed a quietly reductive architectural language—one grounded in structure, climate and material permanence. Often described as a form of gentle brutalism, its architecture seeks to reconsider what a distinctly Queensland architecture might be: robust yet generous, restrained yet deeply connected to climate, landscape and everyday life.
