About:
Newcastle University’s Hatton Gallery art collection took significant shape in the 1950s, driven by the ambition of Professor of Fine Art, Lawrence Gowing, to create a new, permanent collection of art for the Hatton Gallery.
During that decade, with the judicious use of limited funds, Gowing purchased a considerable number of European paintings spanning the fourteenth to the eighteenth century from art dealers, collectors and auction houses.
However, as a means of introducing more contemporary works to King’s College staff and students and the gallery-going public, Gowing also looked for other ways of accessing and acquiring artworks.
It is these methods which Dr Melanie Stephenson will explore in her talk, following the journeys into the collection of some of the artwork in 'Modern Pictures: The Hatton Collection' exhibition, assisted by their supporting archives.
