About this Event
What does it mean to pay attention to Jane Austen today, in the wake of her 250th anniversary and the global phenomenon of Bridgerton?
ASU Regents Professor Devoney Looser—author of Wild for Austen—law student Dahlia Haran, and researcher Riki Cleveland share their personal journeys into the world of the iconic British author. They'll discuss the challenges, triumphs, and surprises found in researching women writers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and dive into the bigger questions of Austen's legacy: What is gained by centering this entire era around her name, and why should we still be reading the earlier writers who inspired Jane herself? Whether you're a scholar or a fan of the Regency era, come discover what we find—and what we lose—when we look back at the "Age of Jane Austen."
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Devoney Looser is Regents Professor of English at Arizona State University and the author or editor of nine books on literature by women, including The Making of Jane Austen. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, Salon, The Washington Post, and Entertainment Weekly, and she's had the pleasure of talking about Austen on CNN. Looser, who has played roller derby as Stone Cold Jane Austen, is a Guggenheim Fellow and a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona, with her husband and two sons.
