It has almost universally been argued that the homes of the poor prior to the twentieth century were of the lowest quality, being overcrowded, unsanitary, comfortless, vulnerable to the elements and insecure. We must, however, be wary of these accounts. This talk by Dr Joseph Harley of Anglia Ruskin University draws on his recent book ‘At Home with the Poor’ to look at these ideas through local archives, including the remarkable work of Rev Richard Cobbold, who painted and described the homes of the poor in his village of Wortham, Suffolk. There will be a chance to see the original Cobbold volumes after the talk. 12+, £8
