About this Event

Join us for an evening with David Kalloo, returning to the library after his inspiring appearance for Windrush Day earlier this year.

This time, David will be sharing from his brand-new book, Portobello Beach, a vibrant collection of eclectic short stories that will make you smile, ache, and maybe even call your mother.

Portobello Beach is a meeting place of accents, secrets, and dreams that refuse to fade. With a voice both lyrical and mischievous, Kalloo celebrates small triumphs, tangled loves, and tender absurdities, all with his signature warmth and wit.

Expect lively storytelling, thoughtful reflections, and a chance to ask questions and chat with David about his writing, his inspiration, and his creative journey.

David Kalloo was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and moved to London in 1989. He holds a BA (Hons) in Caribbean Studies and Media Studies from London Metropolitan University and a Master’s in International Relations.

Beyond writing, David has been deeply involved in cultural and community work: he has served as Secretary for the World Carnival Commission, a judge with both the London Notting Hill Carnival and Hackney One Carnival, and Media Manager (now Director) of the Notting Hill Carnival Pioneers Festival. He is also the founder of Culturepulse magazine, connecting the Caribbean diaspora and beyond.

David is the author of four books: Green Mango Chow (his debut novel), Jumbie in Town, Hitchhiking to Montreal, and his latest, Portobello Beach.
