About this Event
Join scholar Alice Lovejoy as she discusses her new book, Tales of Militant Chemistry: The Film Factory in a Century of War, which tells the little-known story of Eastman Kodak’s work for the Manhattan Project. Following scientists, soldiers, forced laborers, and spies between the United States, Germany, the Belgian Congo, and the Soviet Union, Tales of Militant Chemistry braids Kodak’s atomic history with the histories of film factories across the globe, especially Agfa’s plant in the German town of Wolfen. It shows how, between World War I and the Cold War, film became a weapon—not in its images or sounds, but in its chemistry. Lovejoy is joined by Dan Streible (NYU Tisch) and Cristina Vatulescu (NYU Department of Comparative Literature).
