About this Event

Takénobu is the middle name and musical appellative of Japanese American cellist and composer Nick Ogawa. Over the course of 7 studio albums, Takénobu has had iterations as a trio with percussion, a multi-layered solo outfit, and now as a duo with wife and violinist Kathryn Koch. As a duo Takénobu perform original live-looping cinematic folk songs ranging from vocal harmonies over layered pizzicato chords to dreamy and dramatic instrumental pieces.

Takénobu’s most recent album Always Leave a Note, is out September 3, 2021. The album was written and recorded during lockdown over the course of 2020, and served as a hopeful escape during a tumultuous time in the world.

News About Our Indoor Performances

It’s a new day! As the governor recently promised, the era of COVID restrictions on most public behavior is OVER. We are free to welcome you back INDOORS, and there are no restrictions on capacity. There is also no requirement for masks, but that could change, even at the last minute, depending, in part, on the general feelings of those present. So please bring your mask and have it handy.

THERE IS, HOWEVER, A REQUIREMENT THAT EVERYONE WHO ENTERS SHOW PROOF OF VACCINATION (or a negative COVID test from within the previous 5 days). For your convenience, here is the way to get a digital proof that you can carry with you on your phone. Just go to the state's Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record website at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov.

Although some might see this last bit as invasive, it is clearly necessary, not just for the actual safety of everyone in the room, but also for the PERCEIVED safety that is so important to the comfort level of all of us who have gotten so used to avoiding each other's naked breath.

It is going to take a while before we learn to re-train our reflexes, and once again get comfortable with being part of an indoor crowd. We at The Back Room understand that, and that is why we are continuing to offer outdoor shows at least through August.

But some of our performers want or need to be inside, and we now have a few inside shows scheduled in both July and August. At this moment, all of September's shows are presumed to be inside. And although that could change, there is no question that we all need to get reacquainted with each other's unmasked faces. Enforcing the vaccination requirement is going to greatly help in this important task.

Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door. Children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available at the link below, or you may purchase your tickets at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby).

The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-654-3808. Thank you for your support!
