About this Event
The Tagoreans is the oldest Bengali cultural organisation in the UK, founded in 1965 by the Late Tapan & Gairika Gupta. Over the last 58 years, The Tagoreans have been involved in producing pioneering and innovative musical, artistic, cultural, social and educational initiatives in the UK, across continental Europe and in various cities in India.
Panelists include: Piali Ray, OBE (Dance), Chandak Sengoopta (Film) and Tanika Gupta, MBE (Theatre) will showcase an engaging discussion about Tagore’s multifaceted creative genius.
Piali Ray OBE is Director of Sampad, a leading national agency for the development of South Asian arts, based in Birmingham. She has been a dancer, teacher and choreographer in the UK since 1982, touring extensively internationally, throughout India and within the UK with organisations such as Birmingham Repertory Theatre, CBSO, The National Gallery and the National Theatre.
Chandak Sengoopta is a professor in the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology at Birkbeck College, University of London. His major research interests include the history of European medicine, the history of modern science in India and the cultural history of modern India. He has authored several publications including “The rays before Satyajit: creativity and modernity in Colonial India” (2016) and “Imprint of the Raj” (2004).
Tanika Gupta MBE is an award winning critically acclaimed writer, playwright and dramatist who has been writing for the stage, radio and TV for over 30 years; a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the recipient of multiple awards and accolades for over 20 years.
