Claudia Chagoya
Claudia Chagoya is a Mexican interdisciplinary artist born in Zacatecas, Mexico, and based in Calgary, Canada. She holds an MFA degree from the University of Calgary, and a BFA from Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Her artistic practice explores topics related to gender violence and her socio-political background, using materials rooted in Mexican culture such as: rebozos, salt, copal and sawdust.
Chagoya is the recipient of the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society’s New Canadian Artist Award 2022. She has also obtained grants from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Calgary Arts Development, Canada Council for the Arts and has been shortlisted for the Alberta Artist in Residence/Arts Ambassador Program in 2021. Her work has been exhibited in Mexico and in Canada and has she been an artist in Residence at the Royal College of Art in London, UK, the Women’s Centre of Calgary and Calgary Allied Arts Foundation at cSPACE King Edward, and at the Ledge Gallery in Arts Commons as part of the RBC Emerging Visual Artists Program (RBCEVAP) 2021-2022.
Mares of Thrace
Canadian two-piece Mares of Thrace deal in a brand of heaviness that draws as much from noise rock and hardcore as it does from the doom metal they’re commonly grouped with. Their three critically-acclaimed full-length releases have been punctuated with international tours, where their live show has gained a reputation for what Absolute Underground Magazine described as “[sounding] like there are at least five people onstage”.
Founded in 2009 by Trez (vocals, guitar) and Stef (drums), Mares released their debut The Moulting in 2010, where it topped national campus radio charts and was hailed by PopMatters as “superb”; they signed to Canada’s venerable Sonic Unyon Records shortly thereafter. 2012’s The Pilgrimage was produced by Sanford Parker (Voivod, Yob, Pelican) and praised by Pitchfork, Decibel, and Terrorizer, as well as receiving a nod from Canada’s prestigious Polaris Prize. After several North American tours, a hiatus followed; they re-emerged in 2022 with Trez remaining at the helm, and long-standing Mares collaborator Casey on drums, bass, and electronics. 2022’s The Exile was deemed by many reviewers as their finest work to date; Decibel praised its “nuance, vulnerability, and maturity”, and AngryMetalGuy called it “the sound of a band in its prime, not one just slinking back in from the cold”.
Takleef Ensemble
Takleef Ensemble is a free-improvisational group led by Mustafa Rafiq. The current iteration is a quintet made up of long-standing members of Edmonton's experimental music community.
Ethan Bokma, Joseph Hyde, Parker Thiessen & Jenna Turner join Rafiq in bringing together their essence in an effort to unbind & rejoice in the healing power of sound.
Holly De Caigny
Holly De Caigny is a contemporary saxophonist who strives to collaborate with a variety of artists. She has performed publicly across Canada, the United States, as well as in Slovenia, France, and Thailand. Most recently, she has toured Eastern Canada with Proteus Quartet, performed online and in person with Timepoint Ensemble, performed in free improvisation concerts with Secret Lady Project and Bug Incision, and has collaborated with composers including Colin Labadie, Vincent Ho, Jordan Nobles, and Laurie Radford. Holly maintains a busy teaching schedule at the University of Lethbridge, Mount Royal Conservatory and serves as Director of Music in the King’s Own Calgary Regiment Band.
Holly earned a Doctor of Music degree with Dr William Street at the University of Alberta, a masters degree from the University of Calgary, a bachelors degree from the University of British Columbia, and two artist diplomas from the Conservatoire Regional de Rayonnement de Boulogne-Billancourt, France.
