Please join us as we kick off the new year at our annual joint meeting with the Clark Fork Chapter of the Montana Native Plant Society on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 7:00 PM to hear our speaker, Dr. Tabitha Graves present her talk: Plant and Wildlife Interactions in Montana.
Dr. Tabitha Graves will showcase studies of interactions among wildflower and wildlife communities including examples highlighting recent assessments of flowers, bees, birds, and bears. Suckley's bumblebee was just listed as endangered and is one of many wildlife species fueled by flowers. This talk will share information on basic biology of bumble bees with some information about the Western bumble bee whose nests are parasitized by Suckley's bumble bee. In particular the talk will focus on recent research providing context on flowers used by bumblebees in Montana and case studies highlighting floral use by multiple other wildlife species.
Tabitha Graves is a Supervisory Research Ecologist for the U.S. Geological Survey at the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center and is stationed in Glacier National Park. She has over 24 years of experience studying grizzly bears, bighorn sheep, elk, and the development of novel and integrated analyses of habitat use, connectivity, migration, and genetics. Current projects include studies of pollinators, mountain goats, chronic wasting disease, and mule deer. Dr. Graves holds a Master's of Science in Wildlife Biology from the University of Montana and obtained her PhD through Northern Arizona University with a dissertation on spatial ecology of grizzly bears in northwestern Montana and estimating resistance to gene flow.
The meeting will be held in Room 110 in the Interdisciplinary Sciences Building (ISB) on the University of Montana campus. The building lies on the south end of campus on Beckwith Avenue between Maurice and Mansfield avenues. Though not required by the university, FVAS honors the decision of those who wish to wear a mask. You also have the option of watching the meeting over Zoom, the link will be posted here when available.
