About this Event

Elle a publié des articles dans EPD: Society and Space, The Geographical Journal et Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers.

Indigenous Weather
Research Seminar with Jen Rose Smith

How do Indigenous peoples in Alaska and the larger Arctic understand weather events and living in relationship with the atmospheric? How can political Indigenous weather and atmospheric knowledges in creative narrative production get articulated, shared, and practiced in community and in writing and artwork? How do Indigenous women's creative work and participation in the creation of weather knowledges offer something specific for Indigenous communities and their political autonomies? Through selected objects from the CCA Collection, Jen Rose Smith shares reflections on atmospherics and weather events as they have been maintained in Indigenous thought and remade through practices of colonial engineering.

Jen Rose Smith (dAXunhyuu/Eyak) is Assistant Professor of Geography and American Indian Studies at the University of Washington. She works at the intersection of critical Indigenous studies, cultural human geography, and environmental humanities. Her book Ice Geographies: The Colonial Politics of Race & Indigeneity in the Arctic published with Duke University Press takes up race, Indigeneity, and coloniality in polar spaces. She serves on the advisory board for the Eyak Cultural Foundation, a non-profit that organizes language and cultural revitalization gatherings. She has published in EPD: Society and Space, The Geographical Journal, and Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers.

This event is presented in English and is free and open to the public. As space is limited, registration is required. Admission to the museum is included with your registration.
