Experience a truly unique talent when she performs with her trio at ALICE this October. The concert is seated.
With roots in Martinique and West Africa, the French double bassist, singer, and poet Sélène Saint-Aimé blends Afro-Caribbean rhythms, modern jazz, and classical influences in her captivating live performances. Saint-Aimé developed her love for music as a teenager while volunteering at the Festival Django Reinhardt, which ignited the spark for the young talent. She has studied with internationally renowned bassists such as Ron Carter and Lonnie Plaxico, as well as saxophonist Steve Coleman. In 2021, she received the prestigious Victoire du Jazz Award in the Rising Star category for her debut album "Mare Undarum" (2020), which was met with high critical acclaim.
With her latest album "Potomitan" (2022), Sélène Saint-Aimé cements her status as one of the most imaginative and original artists. She effortlessly navigates between modern jazz, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and classical music, creating music that is entirely unique, both smooth and tingling. Saint-Aimé is currently a composer in residence at Tropiques Atrium National Hall of Martinique and is also one of the 2022 Villa Albertine laureates in New Orleans, Louisiana. Additionally, she has co-founded a non-profit organization called Afropolis with the Martinican percussionist Boris Reine-Adélaïde, which aims to promote and develop the practice of traditional music from Martinique. We are immensely excited for Sélène Saint-Aimé's concert at ALICE with her trio, featuring the prominent musicians Rafael Aguila on tenor saxophone and Machito on percussion.
