Symphonic Legends: The Stories of a Forgotten Musical History

Join me for a thought-provoking panel discussion as part of an extraordinary exhibition celebrating the lives and legacies of Black British musicians. Through the lens of history, academia, and live performance, we aim to uncover hidden stories, challenge colonial narratives, and inspire new conversations.

What to Expect:

A panel discussion featuring esteemed scholars and musicians:

• Micheal I. Ohajuru
• Tamsin Alexander
• Cleveland Watkis
• Pauline Muir

Live Performance:

A string quartet will perform Samuel Coleridge Taylor’s 5 Fantasiestücke, Op. 5, showcasing the beauty and brilliance of this iconic composer’s work.

Exhibition in DTH 106:

A week-long exhibition will be held from Thursday, 8th May to Tuesday, 13th May in Room 106 at Deptford Town Hall, featuring the lives and works of four remarkable Black British musicians:

• Samuel Coleridge Taylor (1875 – 1912)
• George Bridgetower (1778 – 1860)
• Joseph Antonio Emidy (1775 – 1835)
• Amanda Aldridge (1866 – 1956)

The exhibition will include posters, audio/visual components of their music, historical newspaper clippings, and documentary clips showcasing their incredible contributions to classical music.

This is an opportunity to both see and hear the enduring legacies of these gatekept musicians while engaging with scholars at the forefront of this research.
