Sylvie Harris: The Ancestry of Home

In 2021, Sylvie Harris visited Poland to trace her family’s cultural traditions back to her great-grandmother’s homeland and to examine how they endure in the domestic space. After growing up in a family devoted to tradition and routine, Harris considers the places where these rituals are carried out and how we create visual landscapes that we find familiar and comforting, though sometimes out of sync with our more modern sensibilities and beliefs. Through photographs, video and textile installations, Harris studies how cultural traditions appear in the domestic space to many of us who attempt, not always easily, to remain connected to them.
