Suicide prevention in autistic and twice-exceptional children and adolescents: insights from the edge
Why do some autistic and twice-exceptional young people experiencing profound suicidal distress remain virtually invisible to the systems around them?
Autistic and twice-exceptional (2E) children and adolescents experience significantly elevated rates of suicidal ideation, self-harm, and suicide-related distress. Yet many young people at greatest risk remain unseen -particularly those who are intellectually gifted, highly masking, academically capable, or perceived as “coping well.”
This presentation explores suicide prevention in autistic and twice-exceptional youth through a neuroaffirming, compassion-focused lens. Guided by a clinical case study, participants will journey through the developmental, emotional, and relational experiences that can contribute to profound hidden distress across childhood and adolescence.
