About this Event

Switched on Cinema returns to PRS with a BANG!! with an original, high octane techno live score to a legendary Japanese exploitation karate classic – SISTER STREET FIGHTER (1974), co-presented by The SoCal Synth Society!

An ongoing screening series, Switched on Cinema (SoC) pairs eclectically curated films with live scores by electrifying electronic composers. The brainchild of dj A/D of KSPC’s Synthdactyl Program, Switched on Cinema’s mission is to highlight the many talented modular synthesizer-based artists in Southern California’s music scene, pairing them with exciting film selections which, through live film scores, will showcase their expansive artistry. For their first outing of 2025, SoC welcomes incredible electronic composers Trovarsi and Marie Nyx for an awesomely energetic collaborative live techno score to Kazuhiko Yamaguchi’s explosively entertaining woman-led buttkickin’ classic SISTER STREET FIGHTER!

After the massive success of Shigehiro Ozawa’s The Street Fighter, Japanese studio Toei built a new karate series around a female lead, casting a young actress who’d appeared in a cameo alongside her mentor Sonny Chiba in the origin film.

Still a teenager at the time, Etsuko Shihomi exploded onscreen and created a new character type: a tough fighter who was fierce, fearless, good-hearted, and decidedly non-sexualised -- a departure from Toei’s typical formula.

Shihomi stars as the half-Chinese, half-Japanese Li Koryu, who travels to Yokohama to investigate the disappearance of her undercover cop brother. Li discovers a smuggling ring run by a drug lord with his own personal army of deadly fighters, and must penetrate his evil lair with the help of a fellow karate master (Sonny Chiba).

Genre entertainment of the highest order, the SISTER STREET FIGHTER is a wild ride and one of the best exploitation films produced in Japan in the 1970s. Funky and over-the-top, filled with wall-to-wall action, and featuring some of the craziest villains ever depicted onscreen, it embodies female power in a male-dominated genre and is a magnificent showcase for the physical presence and martial arts skills of its lead star.

Join us and experience this thrill ride of a film as it’s never been seen before, made all the more thrilling with a live techno score by Marie Nyx and Trovarsi!

TROVARSI

Trovarsi on Sister Street Fighter:

"I absolutely loved Sister Street Fighter! The action is nonstop, and Etsuko Shihomi is incredible as the lead, bringing so much energy and skill to every fight scene. What really stood out to me was how the film demonstrates women’s empowerment, especially for that era—Etsuko’s character is tough, determined, and unapologetically in control. It’s a perfect mix of thrilling martial arts and powerful moments, and I couldn’t get enough of it. This is definitely a standout in the genre for me! I’m so excited to team up with MarieNyx, to electrify the experience with a live techno score, we’ll be using Modular Synths and Drum Machines for their plunderphonic goodness—it’s going to be an electrifying ride!"

MARIE NYX

Marie Nyx on Sister Street Fighter:

"Sister Street Fighter is a thrilling, action-packed adventure with incredible martial arts skill, a powerful feminist undertone, and an unstoppable lead performance. The choreography throughout the film showcases a perfect blend of athleticism and grace, making every fight scene both thrilling and visually captivating. The fierce and fearless lead, Etsuko Shihomi, executes incredible martial arts skill and fluidity in every punch, kick, and throw. Her character’s determination and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds underscore the film's empowering message that women can and should be heroes in their own right. It’s an essential watch for fans of classic martial arts cinema and anyone who enjoys seeing women take center stage in bold, exhilarating roles. As two women in a male dominated industry, having the opportunity to score this film with Trovarsi is an honor!"

Emerging from the vibrant heart of Los Angeles, Marie Nyx is a captivating force in the electronic music scene. With early influences of post-punk, new wave, darkwave, and alternative dance, Marie crafts immersive soundscapes that resonate with both nostalgia and innovation.

Her infectious, apparitional style has graced festival stages by FNGRS CRSSD and Insomniac, respected LA undergrounds, and institutions like The Echo LA and The Lot Radio in NYC. Her confidence in taking risks behind the decks is evident as she adapts to the wants and needs of any dance floor with energetic blends of classic 909 electro and four on the floor beats with the haunting allure of dark, gritty synth lines.

Her innovative style has earned her releases on respected labels such as Delusional Records, Boysnoize Records, Obskur Music, and Deckrekord, each project reflecting her artistic evolution and deep-rooted passion for the genre.

With a growing presence in the electronic scene, Marie Nyx continues to push creative boundaries, inspiring a new generation of listeners and artists alike. Keep an ear out for her upcoming projects, as she solidifies her place as a driving force in the world of underground electronica.

dj A/D SYNTHDACTYL PROGRAM
dj A/D on Sister Street Fighter:

"I'm very excited about the 4th Switched on Cinema! When I saw Sister Street Fighter in the AFGA catalog this April, I KNEW I wanted to create an event around this film. Growing up, martial arts films were one of the few spaces where I saw other Asian women represented on screen. I especially favored films that focused on female fighters with revenge narratives, and Sister Street Fighter delivers this perfectly.
What better way to present this film than with two fierce and mega-talented electronic artists, Trovarsi and Marie Nyx! I can't describe how much I'm looking forward to their collaborative TECHNO score. I've heard some snippets, and my heart felt like it was going to burst out of my chest. You will not want to miss this monumental event!"
