Dearest friends and neighbors, we're happy to be presenting the very first public return of the Jazz Pharaohs at Swing Night on Monday, September 29 at Radio East.
The Jazz Pharaohs held the Wednesday happy hour spot at The Elephant Room for well over two decades, and was one of the more influential swing bands in Austin.
Your Pharaohs line-up:
Freddie Mendoza (founding member) - trombone, voice
Dave Biller - guitar
Ryan Gould - string bass, voice
David Jellema - cornet/clarinet
Paul Schlichting - drums
Lauryn Gould - reeds, voice
*I'm super excited to romp through some great tunes with this crowd. The Pharaohs was an incredibly important influence and inspiration to my early growth as a musicianer here in town and abroad. Stanley Smith (my Jazz Dad) co-led with Freddie, Dave Biller held down some serious guitar-ing; each of them has been teacher, mentor, bandleader, director, and friend (and, in Dave's case, a great cake finder on private parties).
Jelly, Paulie, and I were super lucky to be invited into the fold with these heavy-hitters.
In my ~15 years as a Pharaoh, I got to play music with some truly important musicianers, some who were in the band, some who were just passing through town. So grateful to have had the opportunity, to learn so much, and to make some truly amazing music.
I do hope you'll join us for our official welcome back to town!

Join us Mondays for hot jazz and swing music + dancing with an incredible lineup of bands and lessons from legends of the Austin swing scene and founders of Four on the Floor, Laura Malloy and Matt Jones!
No previous experience or partner necessary! Come as you are! Or bring a date! Or bring yer pal! Or your mom! Whatever you do, just get there!
We'll be playing on the indoor stage - wood floors, delicious food and drink options (both alc and non-alc), ample parking, and a sweet bar staff.
Dance lesson at 7:30pm
Live music 8-9:45pm
No cover! We do suggest a donation of $10-20 in the tip jar, if you can swing it. Pay what you can to support the music you love.
