This year we are exploring the combination of belly dancing and live drums. We love belly dancing because it connects us to our bodies through a natural use and challenge of our physical selves, but the practice requires rhythm to be fully realized.
Modern recording technology creates a layer that isolates the dancer from the music and supports the illusion that music and dance are only performed by experts. In order to break through that illusion and bring our dance practice closer to reality we are adding drums to our dance classes and hosting drum circles.
This workshop is an open invitation for people to try something new that does not require expertise or practice, just a willingness to align yourself with the rhythm created by the group.
Participants will choose the role of drummer, dancer or move fluidly between both to create sound and movement. It’s not just noise making (as satisfying as that is) but rhythm with a purpose.
Bring your drum or musical instrument, dress in your favorite jingling dance festival clothes or in simple workout wear and be prepared to try and create something unique with us.
