Learn to make traditional sweetgrass baskets with master basketmaker Vera Manigault on Saturday, February 11, 2023, 11 am to 1 pm ET at the Gullah Museum in Georgetown, SC. Vera's family has been creating these vessels of memory for eight generations. Gullah Geechees have made sweetgrass baskets for centuries in a style that is identical to the coil baskets of West Africa.
The class fee includes all materials needed to make a basket.
During the class, participants will:
- Learn the difference between basket sewing and weaving.
- Make their own basket as Vera guides you.
- Learn about Gullah Geechee basketmaking traditions.
Enjoy this incredible craft that has been a staple of culture, art, and history in the South Carolina Lowcountry since the 18th Century!
