Step back in time and tread the ancient paths of Neolithic Britain with a guided walk along the famed Sweet Track on the Somerset Levels. Preserved in the peat of Shapwick Heath for nearly 6000 years, the timber trackway offers a fascinating insight into prehistoric engineering, woodwork and travel. Led by Ranger Jon Macaulay, this exclusive 3-hour tour will give you a unique insight into the area's rich heritage.
The guided tour is free as part of the national Heritage Open Days celebration. For more information contact [email protected].
The route of the tour encompasses the Sweet Track Trail within the flooded woodland and reed swamp of the reserve, which is unsuitable for wheelchair users. In places it will include narrow paths, steps, and stiles. Please note that dogs, with the exception of guide dogs, are not permitted on this section of Shapwick Heath.
