John Wesley Hardin became one of the most infamous—and most dangerous—figures of the American frontier.
The West made John Wesley Hardin a legend. Pensacola brought his last escape to an end.
He was intelligent, unpredictable, quick with a gun, and surrounded by stories of violence. Hardin claimed to have killed more than forty men. Historians continue to debate the true number, but there is no question that his name inspired fear throughout Texas.
His violent reputation began when he was still a teenager. From there, Hardin moved through a world of family feuds, gambling disputes, political violence, cattle drives, posses, warrants, and deadly confrontations. By the time Texas authorities intensified their search for him, Hardin had become more than a wanted man. He had become a legend.
But this STM LIVE presentation is not simply another story about a western outlaw. It is the story of what happened when the Old West came to West Florida.
The Gunslinger Who Made His Home in Florida
After years of bloodshed and pursuit, Hardin fled Texas and traveled east under the assumed name John Swain. He eventually made his home in West Florida, where he attempted to build a new life while remaining hidden from the authorities searching for him.
Hardin’s time in Florida is one of the most fascinating—and often overlooked—chapters of his life. The famous Texas gunman was no longer riding across the open frontier. He was living among the people of West Florida, moving through communities that seemed far removed from the violence of his western past.
But Hardin had not escaped his reputation. And he had not escaped the law. Texas Rangers followed his trail east. Their pursuit brought them into cooperation with local Florida authorities, including Escambia County lawmen and Pensacola officers. The search was closing in.
The Capture in Pensacola
In August 1877, the lawmen learned that Hardin would be traveling by train through Pensacola. The outlaw who had survived gunfights, posses, and years on the run was about to face a carefully planned capture.
In downtown Pensacola, the long flight of one of the most infamous gunfighters in American history finally came to an end. Hardin had escaped Texas. He had hidden in Florida.
But in Pensacola, he met his match.

Michael Earl Simmons is a retired Pensacola Police Department sergeant, former homicide investigator, police historian, and author. A second-generation Pensacola police officer, he served thirty years with the department in patrol, investigations, training, community policing, and other specialized assignments.
Today, he is the founder of Sweet Tea Murders, where he brings forgotten crimes and historic cases back to life through careful research, investigative insight, and Southern storytelling. His unique perspective allows audiences to experience these stories not only as history—but through the eyes of a former detective.
