Krista Low - bass viol & Matt Jones - theorbo, present beautiful old music from Italy & France.
We begin with italian music from 1592-1640. Tiorba soli by Alessandro Piccinini (bolognese, a pro at 16 for the Duke of Ferrara) & Bellerofonte Castaldi (a gifted amateur from Modena), a toccata by ferrarese 'Orazio della viola' and divisions on hit madrigals for viola bastarda (so-called as it traverses all the voices) by Riccardo Rognoni & son, Francesco (founders of the violin school in Milano). The tiorba accompanies the viol. We also play Kapsperger (the most famous of all theorbists in Roma) in which the roles are reversed.
We then visit Paris for a pastiche suite with Marin Marais, viole, & Robert de Visรฉe, thรฉorbe, who both served in Versailles from the 1680s onwards.
Krista plays a seven string bass viol by Andrew Tait after Michel Colichon, Paris 1691.
Matt plays a 14 string theorbo by Ivo Magherini after Magno Dieffenbruchar, Venetia c.1600-20.
