About this Event
Promise, Policy, and Prosperity
Please join us as visiting professor, Dr. Ashwani Kumar, explores India’s rise through the interplay of democracy, demography, and development, as it advances toward becoming the world’s third-largest economy. Driven by aspiration and ambition, India’s transformation reflects the emancipatory power of democracy and economic reform—expanding capabilities, deepening market participation, and enabling inclusion at an unprecedented scale. Through innovations in policy and delivery—digital public infrastructure, women-centric financial inclusion, targeted welfare, and expanded access to education—India demonstrates that growth can coexist with social diversity.
Backed by a highly skilled, versatile workforce, a resilient diaspora, and growing soft power, India, an ancient civilization and a young nation, approaches its centenary of independence in 2047 at a critical inflection point, shaping a model of shared prosperity and peace, locally and globally.
This event is hosted by the University of Indianapolis Provost's Office.

The Sutphin Lecture series was established in the early 1960's by Samuel Brady Sutphin with the intention of bringing lecturers to campus to stimulate interest in the humanities, literature, philosophy, and the arts. The series was endowed in 1985 by Dudley V. Sutphin and Samuel Reid Sutphin -- sons of Samuel Brady Sutphin -- in memory of their father. We are excited to continue this series in 2026.
