About this Event

This course will cover the basic science and skills needed to take an ecological and sustainable approach to home gardening and landscaping. This course is focused on the importance of native plants, the ecology of plants and wildlife, and practical actions that gardeners and landscapers can use to create healthy home habitats. Participants will learn about local ecosystems in the Grand Strand region, sustainable landscaping issues and how to address them, the fascinating science of plant-insect interactions, best practices for gardening with native plants, and ecological landscape design principles. This course is suited for anyone with an interest in local ecology, gardening, biodiversity and nature, or landscape design.
Maeve brings scientific training and an ecological mindset to native plant gardening. Working with the landscape, promoting biodiversity, and supporting ecosystem services are her guiding principles. She uses her familiarity with the local ecosystems of coastal South Carolina to guide design choices. She also enjoys watercolor painting and brings artistic creativity into her work. Maeve is an experienced environmental educator and is passionate about communicating the importance of native plants. She currently serves as the president of the Grand Strand chapter of the South Carolina Native Plant Society.

Please Note: All classes are open to the public. If you would like to pursue the South Carolina Native Plant Certificate Program, all core classes plus 4 electives are required for completion.

Some classes in the certificate program include fieldwork and can be physically demanding. We may use hiking trails with moderate difficulty. Participants must be in good physical condition and able to hike 1-2 miles without difficulty or assistance over terrain with steep sections, where footing will be uneven, with frequent tree roots, rocks, muddy areas and fallen tree trunks to climb or step over. Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots are required.
