Visit Sustainable Fashion Exhibition Closing Reception This Saturday March 19th!

At the closing reception & clothing swap, you will have one last chance to see the upcycled collection from Sayoko Creations and explore the exhibit about fashion sustainability. The designer, Sayoko Kojima, will give a brief talk about her collection and answer questions. The clothing swap will be open throughout the event, so bring a few pieces from a 'former you' and leave with something to carry you into your next chapter.

If you don't have clothes to swap, there's another way to join in the fun! The exhibition organizers will give away pieces from Sayoko's installation centerpiece: a tower of discarded clothes that she stretched over a scaffold reaching the ceiling. This giveaway will be run like a white elephant gift exchange, where Sayoko brought all the gifts and you only have to pay $5 to buy-in.

How to Swap?

1. RSVP here for free2. Clean out your closet and find at least one item* to bring to the swap3. Come to our exhibition closing reception and say "Hi!" at our Welcome Desk4. We'll give you a ticket in exchange for each clothing item or accessory you brought 5. Browse the racks, get to know the other swappers, and select something that brings you joy (we will have mirrors and changing rooms)6. Check-out by heading back to the Welcome Desk and trading in your tickets

About the artist

Sayoko Kojima’s art frequently explores themes of reinvention, repurposing, and reuse. Born and raised in Japan, Kojima was brought up in the spirit of Mottainai- “do not waste”, “less is better.” Relocating to New York City in her 20s, Sayoko was stunned by the volume of waste. She recognized these discarded materials as resources and began upcycling them into imaginative clothing and accessories with a twist of humor.

Under her fashion design label, Sayoko Creations, she’s created collections shown at Fashion Week Brooklyn, Sustainable Fashion Week US, and Brooklyn Fashion Academy. Her pieces have also been published in EDGE-fashion intelligence, COLECTA Magazine, Bazaar Vietnam, MARIKA, L’Officiel Lithuania, and The Brooklyn Paper. Her collection, Light to Wear, was displayed at Kings Plaza Mall.
