But such is the case with Susan Cheever, daughter of John Cheever, who is herself a noted and prolific novelist, historian, biographer, and memoirist. In Susan’s second, recently published memoir about her famous father, When All the Men Wore Hats, she offers more intimate insights into him by linking chapters of her childhood to relevant short stories of his. Her first book, Home Before Dark, was revelatory, moving, and poetic, and it virtually redefined the genre of a child writing about a parent. Here she is especially candid in disclosing facts about his life and the kind of father he was to her.
