About this Event

Survive Empires & Build New Worlds: A Poetry Workshop Tending to Our Hearts
Time: 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
July is a heavy complicated month for many of our communities. Massive events are happening to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of America, yet many of our communities are struggling with food insecurity, lack of housing, low employment, on-going ICE raids, wars, and racial injustice. Join us for a morning of tending to our hearts with some poetry. We will begin with a mini-tour of Campo De Cahuenga Museum and the historic land it sits on. Then we will immerse ourselves in a poetry workshop led by poet Sonia Guiñansaca, focusing on how we continue to survive empires and how we can help build new worlds for all our communities. Writing materials will be provided.
Bio:
Sonia Guiñansaca (Kichwa-Kañari) is an internationally acclaimed poet, and cultural strategist with over 17 years of experience in movement and cultural organizing. Beginning their career as part of the first wave of young people to publicly come out as undocumented, they helped build some of the largest undocumented organizations in the U.S. and co-founded artistic projects by and for undocumented artists. Their debut self-published poetry book, Nostalgia & Borders (2016) was recently translated into Kichwa and Spanish by Severo Editorial as Nostalgia Y Fronteras (2023). They co-edited the award winning anthology, Somewhere We Are Human: Authentic Voices On Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings (HarperCollins 2023). They have been awarded residencies and fellowships from the Poetry Foundation, the British Council, and Creative Time. They have performed at the Met, Lincoln Center, and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and have been featured in publications such as Interview Magazine, Ms. Magazine, Teen Vogue, and on PBS. Their migration and cultural work has taken them to Colombia, Ecuador, London, Argentina, and Mexico City to speak on migrant policy and arts equity.
