About this Event
Surrealist Drawing Workshop with Vincent Matthews
Join artist and curator Vincent Matthews, Vice President of the Drawing Society, for an inspiring evening of imagination and mark-making at the Royal Society of Arts.
Inspired by the spirit of Surrealism—with its fascination for dreams, chance and the unconscious—this relaxed workshop invites participants to explore the playful and unexpected possibilities of surrealist drawing. Through guided exercises and open experimentation, Vincent will show how imagination can unlock new creative directions and help develop images that move beyond the ordinary.
Alongside the drawing session, Vincent will share insights from his artistic practice and curatorial experience in an informal conversation with Lesley Samms FRSA, founder of Pure Arts Group.
Whether you are an experienced artist or simply curious to try something new, this session offers a welcoming space to experiment, discover and connect with others through art.
Materials: Some paper and pencils will be supplied. You are invited to also bring along your own sketch book and preferred drawing implements.
All ticket sales will be donated to the AGBI, supporting its charitable work.
Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. ✏️🎨
Vincent Matthews FRSA
Vincent Matthews is a professional architect and artist. This series of works shows his latest interest in surrealism, veering away from his traditional black and white drawings. This transformation happened during the Covid lockdown, as more colour creeped into his work, including in his 110 daily sketches, and as he rediscovered his love for oil painting and painting from imagination. The emerging work is a mixture of memory, sketch inspiration and pure fiction, reminding him of his early school days in art class, drawing buildings inspired by his own imagination.
Surrealism was embraced as a natural part of Vincent’s trajectory. To him, dreams are suggestive, leaving the viewer to decide what story lies in front of them. The process goes beyond depiction, allowing him to delve into his unconscious mind, revealing scenes that may, to some, appear illogical, bizarre or unexpected but to him, seem perfectly right.
The Dr Cross room, located on level -1, is dedicated to showcasing artwork by RSA Fellows.
