About this Event
Supervising others is one of the most important responsibilities in higher education—and one that often comes with little formal preparation.
Whether you supervise full-time staff, part-time employees, or student workers, your approach to supervision shapes employee success, departmental performance, and workplace culture.
SuperSTAR Supervision in Higher Education is an interactive professional development session designed specifically for supervisors in colleges and universities who want practical tools they can apply immediately.
Participants will leave with clear frameworks, strategies, and resources to strengthen their supervisory approach.
What You Will Learn:
The program introduces the STAR Supervisor framework, focusing on four key areas of effective supervision:
- Start: Setting the tone for success through thoughtful hiring, onboarding, and clear expectations.
- Time: Making supervision intentional through meaningful one-on-one conversations and consistent communication.
- Alignment: Creating clarity and accountability through shared expectations and performance conversations.
- Resources: Identifying the tools, strategies, and supports employees need to succeed and grow.
Key Outcomes
Participants will leave the session with:
- A practical framework for effective supervision
- Strategies for addressing behaviors that are not meeting expectations
- Tools for strengthening communication and accountability
- Resources they can continue using after the program
This session emphasizes practical application, not just theory.
Learn Alongside Peers
One of the most valuable aspects of this program is the opportunity to connect with supervisors from other institutions. Participants often say the peer conversations and shared experiences are among the most valuable parts of the session.
Who Should Attend
This program is designed for professionals in higher education who supervise employees, including:
- Executives
- Supervisors and managers of any department
- Directors and program leaders
- Student affairs professionals
- Academic administrators
- Staff supervising student employees or graduate assistants
- New supervisors and experienced leaders alike
If supervising others is part of your role, this program is designed for you.
Bring a Colleague
Professional development is often most impactful when teams learn together.
Many institutions send multiple supervisors so they can build shared strategies for supervision and leadership.
If you supervise staff alongside colleagues on your campus, consider attending together.
