Less than a month from now, Super!Giant!Jump!Star! will have its grand premiere in Richmond. It's been a lonnnnng time in the making and I kind of can't believe it's finally happening. This project imagines cultural traditions—the food, the songs, the dances—to commemorate the eventual transition of Earth’s North Star from Polaris to a new guiding light. Over the last 10 years, hundreds of people across the country have helped shape this vision—inventing the customs and building giant illuminated paper sculptures to represent our future North Stars.
And now, for the very first time, all of these elements will come together to premiere in one place, thanks to 1708 Gallery/InLight:
Super!Giant!Jump!Star!
Abner Clay Park, Richmond, VA
October 17 & 18, 7–11 PM
Highlights will include the world premiere of Jherek Bischoff's Jump!Star symphony performed by the Richmond Symphony under the night sky, Mirah performing live with the United Voices of Ebenezer of Richmond gospel choir, a barn dance under the stars to the sounds of Jee Sim's star signatures, a Jump!Star board game...
…And also: a luminous procession of Future North Star sculptures.
This procession is not just a highlight of the night — it is the heart of Jump!Star. The whole project is about imagining new traditions together, and the procession only comes alive when the community carries it forward (literally!). We’ll need over a hundred volunteers — what we call Dark Matter, since you’ll be the invisible force holding up the stars — to bring this vision to life.
By joining the procession, you won’t just be helping out. You’ll be part of the art itself — part of a constellation of neighbors, friends, and fellow hopeful lovers of the future. If you’ve ever wanted to step inside the magic rather than just watch from the sidelines, this is your chance. Become Dark Matter:

The present moment is rough. Let’s come together in joyful resistance to celebrate, and work on inventing a better future.
With much love and excitement,
George
