Akin to the films of Jean Cocteau, Tim Burton, and Guillermo del Toro, these fantasy-horror films by legendary Czech New Wave filmmaker and master of the macabre Juraj Herz will cast a spell on you in Theatre 2 at the ! These grimy and grotesque offerings are more vivid than ever thanks to brand new restorations courtesy of from their expansive collection of classic folk horror, and both films will be introduced by Czech language student and Chicago Underground Film Festival programmer !

In this version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, the monstrous prince is part falcon—a looming, twitching bird of prey with piercing eyes, matted feathers, and talons that shred human flesh with ease. His prisoner is Julie, and he resists the urge to drink her blood as he admires her extraordinary beauty and innocent heart. He gives strict orders never to look at him, and, day by day, Julie grows more fascinated by her unseen captor. This film reinvents the living castle of Jean Cocteau's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1946) and makes it much creepier, like the bed where Julie sleeps, which has four posts of human shape that lower the canopy like the lid of a casket. We bet you've never seen a retelling of “Beauty and the Beast” as strange or bleak as this!
In THE NINTH HEART, an evil astrologist (complete with unibrow and stringy combover) captures the princess and collects human hearts to restore his youth and give him power over the living and the dead. The film is slapstick at first as a young student falls in love with a traveling marionettist, befriends a clown (who looks just like Grandpa Munster), and wreaks havoc with a newfound invisibility cloak, but the mood grows heavier as our unlikely hero journeys by ferry to a moonlit world with a clockwork castle embedded in craggy white dunes. We wouldn't be surprised if this gothic nightmare reinforced Tim Burton's affection for the fashionably ghastly or intensified Guillermo del Toro's love of mechanical marvels.
