Chastain Park today is known as a North Atlanta gem with over 260 acres holding jogging paths, playgrounds, tennis courts, a golf course, a public swimming pool, horse park, amphitheater, and more. But less than 100 years ago, sheltered by ancient trees and giant boulders, this site hosted an array of curiosities including a natural wonder simply known as The Witches Cave. The history of Chastain park is long and winding, from hosting public almes houses, a grim prison farm, and being a catalyst of desegregation in city to now being a community cornerstone of North Atlanta. This urban oasis not only provides a plethora of pollinator gardens and diverse array of tree species that create a rainbow-like canopy in the fall but also holds keys to Atlanta’s past with secrets written along the century old stonework.About the Guides: Kent Watkins and Maxine Watkins are residents of Sandy Springs who enjoy hiking, biking and exploring new parks during their free time. They are experienced tour leaders supporting Trees Atlanta's mission by planting, pruning and sharing their love of trees with others.
About the Chastain Park Conservancy: CPC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the stewardship of Troy Chastain Memorial Park’s natural and historic resources.
