About this Event
(FBC) is dedicated to promoting inclusivity & safety in birding for everyone especially LGBTQIA2S+, BIPOC & disabled folks and women.
Join FBC for sunrise birding at 63rd Street Beach on Sunday August 17th from 7am to 9am in search of fall migratory shorebirds, plus local avian residents. No prior experience with birdwatching is required. Families are also welcome to join (children do not need to RSVP). Binoculars will be available for loan upon request.
Meet Here: We'll meet as a group here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pZ4hKcuDjcWcpsTA9 and then walk toward the beach.
Getting There: 63rd street beach is easily accessible via the lakefront trail via bike as well as by public transit via the CTA #63 Bus. You can also take the metra electric from downtown to the 63rd street stop, which is about a 20 minute walk from the beach. We recommend the train that is scheudled to arrive at 6:28am, note it is a flag stop so tell them when you get on that you'd like to get off at 63rd. For more directions using public transportation visit www.transitchicago.com. There is a paid parking lot at 63rd street beach, which you have to pay before entering. There is also a paid parking lot at Jackson Park on the other side of lake shore drive, which you can take the pedestrian tunnel over to the beach and meetup point. If you would like to arrange a carpool, please join our feminist bird club chicago discord.
Accessibility & Terrain: The terrain is mostly sand as well as a concrete pier with some large cracks; we may also venture off to some paved or mowed grass areas if the beach is uneventful. Be prepared to walk in the sand about 1 mile roundtrip while birding. Public bathrooms should be available at the beach.
Questions? Please email [email protected].
Dress: Please dress in comfortable weather appropriate clothing and layers. August can be hot and sunny so please bear this in mind with sun protection.
PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER IF YOU ARE NOT ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU ARE ABLE TO ATTEND. CANCEL YOUR TICKET IN ADVANCE IF YOUR PLANS CHANGE.
