About this Event
On Friday, March 27th, join us at Kvartira for a deeply moving evening with Natalya Sukhonos as she presents her third collection, Sunlight Trapped in Stone. A native of Odesa, Ukraine, Natalya is a poet and scholar who carries a world of languages and landscapes within her. This collection is a book of witness, grief, and healing that wanders through the fields of war-torn Ukraine, the ancient stones of Guadalajara, and the whimsical architecture of childhood.
Natalya’s own journey is as expansive as her poetry. A Harvard PhD in Comparative Literature and a two-time Pushcart Prize nominee, she is truly multilingual, moving effortlessly between Russian, English, Ukrainian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian. Having lived in cities from Rio de Janeiro to Istanbul, she now makes her home in Upstate New York with her daughters and her husband, writer Ian Ross Singleton. Her work acts as a cradle for a sea of voices—immigrants, refugees, and lovers—bringing them out from the amber of memory to speak to us with urgent, full-blooded clarity.
We invite you to settle into our cozy space for this journey through multiple languages and memories. Our doors will open at 7:00 PM for a bit of settling in and conversation, with the presentation beginning promptly at 7:30 PM. As always for our evening gatherings, we operate on a BYOB basis, so feel free to bring along a bottle of something you enjoy to sip on while we listen and discuss.
To keep our small non-profit bookstore going and ensure we can continue hosting these vital conversations, tickets for the evening are $10. If you would like to guarantee yourself a copy of Natalya’s new book to take home, we highly recommend the $20 ticket option, which includes a pre-ordered copy of the collection at a special rate. We truly look forward to sharing this luminous evening of poetry and community with you.
