Mikko Pettinen Why Not is a top Finnish jazz band, known for its original sound, catchy compositions, and top-class musicians. The band is led by trumpeter and composer Mikko Pettinen, and the line-up also includes Joakim Berghäll (baritone saxophone and bass clarinet), Vesa Ojaniemi (bass and electronics), and Tuomas Timonen (drums and Sensory Percussion).
The band's music creatively combines jazz and electronic influences, creating a unique and modern soundscape. Why Not's debut album "Two Suites For The Change" was released in 2020 and has received great reviews both in Finland and internationally.
In January 2025, the band will head to the studio to record their upcoming album "Patient Patient", which will be released at the end of the year. The album's compositions were inspired by the diagnosis of an ultra-rare disease, superficial siderosis, that Mikko Pettinen received in March 2023, and the feelings and uncertainty associated with it.
Why Not's new compositions transport their listeners deep into the world of personal experiences, life's challenges, and hope. The album combines virtuoso playing and deeply touching melodies, showcasing the skill and creativity of each member of the band. In the album's title song, *Patient Patient*, Pettinen has composed the entire cryptic report about his ear surgery word for word, turning the text into a unique musical experience. This bold and personal work reflects not only Pettinen's amazing compositional skills but also his ability to bring deep and personal experiences into musical storytelling.
Mikko Pettinen's Why Not has been on hiatus for a few years but is now active with new music and recording.
