About this Event
Seminar 6- The Dark Masses of our Uninstructed People
How many people went to church in Sunderland in the mid-19th century? The little known 1851 Church Census will answer that – or perhaps it does not! Then from one controversy to another – what was the role of religion in the 19th century? Was it a force for radicalism or for conservatism?
Local historian Stuart Miller examines six aspects of the development of modern Sunderland from the 1780s to the 1880s.
Each session will last for two hours including a break of 30 minutes to sample the coffee and cake of the Seventeen Nineteen coffee corner.
No prior knowledge is required. Simply an interest in the history of Sunderland, and a sense of humour!
