Seminar 2 - More the work of Art than Nature
If I was going to build Sunderland from scratch I wouldn’t have chosen the Wear! Very neglected in studying the history of our city is the work of the River Wear Commissioners, and their creation of the harbour which enabled the great industries which underpinned the economic growth of Wearside.
Local historian Stuart Miller examines six aspects of the development of modern Sunderland from the 1780s to the 1880s.
Each session will last for two hours including a break of 30 minutes to sample the coffee and cake of the Seventeen Nineteen coffee corner.
No prior knowledge is required. Simply an interest in the history of Sunderland, and a sense of humour!
Accessibility
The Sunderland Seminars will take place in the Library, which is up a flight of stairs over the Gallery. Please let us know in advance if this is a barrier to your access, as we can make arrangements to use another space if necessary.
Cost
£2.50 (pay in advance or at the door. Booking recommended, numbers limited)
