Explore the development of modern Sunderland with Stuart Miller, between the1780s-1880s with his intimate series of seminars.Seminar 5 - The Night Side of Sunderland
Not for the faint-hearted I can assure you! The adventures of “Dagoon” in the East End of Sunderland in the 1870s give us an entry point to the debate about the so-called “Condition of England Question” and about the “great social evil of the day” – prostitution. We will also encounter the genre of Social Exploration.
Local historian Stuart Miller examines six aspects of the development of modern Sunderland from the 1780s to the 1880s.
Each session will last for two hours including a break of 30 minutes to sample the coffee and cake of the Seventeen Nineteen coffee corner.
No prior knowledge is required. Simply an interest in the history of Sunderland, and a sense of humour!
