Social Ride Leader : Paul SteadTo mark the last day of summer, the Sunday Social ride this month will be a slightly longer route to Middleton-In-Teesdale and will take in three refreshment stops en route.
*Start Point:*
Boroughbridge Back Lane car park (NOT Morrisons) YO51 9AT. Loos are open at this car park for a pre-ride comfort break.
* Arrive from 9am, briefing starts 9.20am depart 9.30am promptly.
* Please arrive with sufficient fuel before we set off - Morrisons petrol station in Boroughbridge is open 24 hours and the meet point is only a short distance away.
*The ride:*
From Boroughbridge, the ride goes through the Dales and up to Middleton-in-Teesdale via Brough Castle before turning for York through Barnard Castle and twisty roads bypassing Northallerton and Thirsk.
The full ride from Boroughbridge and back to York will be c160 miles on A and good B roads, with lots of ‘twisties’ and some truly glorious sections like the B6276 from Brough to Middleton. The only caveat is that unexpected road closures may necessitate last minute route changes.
After lunch the planned route takes about two hours to ride back to York, however, for those that need to get home earlier, Scotch Corner is not far from Barnard Castle (just before lunch) or Eppleby (our late lunch stop).
*Refreshments and fuel:*
In a break from tradition I’m planning three refreshment stops: Hawes for a really quick cuppa and leg stretch, Brough Castle Ice Cream Parlour and Tearoom just before lunch and then at Eppleby Village Tearoom (which won the 2025 “Best Cafe in North Yorkshire” award at the Yorkshire Show) for a late lunch where Emma can offer some home cooked goodies.
There are a selection of fuel stations en route and we can discuss tank range on the morning to plan the best stop - if one is needed.
*Who is it for:*
The ride is suitable for all paid-up ARNY members irrespective of test status, and with or without pillions. Providing there’s enough bikes, we’ll be using the drop-off system (https://www.arny.org.uk/copy-of-social-riding-hints-and-tips) and for those new to group riding, advice is given on the ARNY website (https://www.arny.org.uk/general-5).
I hope you can join us and if so please put your names down on the Summer Calendar spreadsheet as soon as you can, as our lunch stop has asked for an idea of numbers to cater for.
